The Carry Cop-Outs

As an avid firearms enthusiast and competitive shooter, I've heard just about every excuse in the book for why someone can't carry a concealed handgun. The truth is, responsible gun owners have a duty to carry whenever legally and safely possible. Consistent carry takes dedication, but the payoff in personal protection is immeasurable.

"I Can't Carry That Many Places"

One of the most common misconceptions I hear is that you can't carry a concealed handgun in most public places. The reality is the opposite — in most states, you can carry in the vast majority of locations you frequent during your daily routine. Just because you can't carry at work doesn't mean you can't be armed during the rest of your day.

I've had jobs where I couldn't carry on the premises, but I still made it a point to keep my firearm on me for the rest of my time outside the workplace. With a little planning, you can find the right balance and carry consistently, even if there are a few locations where it's prohibited.

"It's Just To The Store, I Don't Need a Gun"

This is perhaps the most illogical excuse I encounter. People will claim they "don't need" to carry when running a quick errand, but the whole point of concealed carry is to be prepared at all times. Would you leave your wallet or keys at home because you're "just going to the store"? Of course not — those are essential everyday items. Your concealed handgun should be treated the same way.

Consistency is key when it comes to developing the habit of carrying. Make it a point to always have your firearm with you, no matter how short the trip. The more you can ingrain it as a routine, the more natural and effortless it will become.

"It's Real Heavy, So I Left It This Time"

This one is a matter of finding the right equipment. If your carry gun feels overly heavy or bulky, it's likely not the optimal choice for your needs and body type. Look for more compact, lightweight options designed specifically for everyday carry, like the Glock 43X, Sig P365, or Springfield Hellcat.

The right holster and belt system also play a big role in comfort and concealment. Invest in quality gear that allows you to carry discreetly without unnecessary bulk or weight.

Bottom Line

At the end of the day, there's no good excuse for a responsible gun owner not to carry their concealed handgun whenever legally and safely possible. With the right mindset, equipment, and training, consistent carry should be the default, not the exception.

Stop making excuses and start making safety and preparedness your top priorities. Your life and the lives of your loved ones may one day depend on it.
